Experience Tampa’s Botanical Oasis

Tampa’s beautiful botanical gardens are a hidden gem in Hillsborough County, offering visitors a peaceful escape into nature right in the heart of the city. What was once merely a plot of undeveloped land (Fowler Ave was only a 2-lane road!) in the 60’s has now grown into an impressive 16 acres of gardens welcoming a staggering 35,000 guests a year. Learn the history, best times to visit, and why this garden oasis is important to our great city of Tampa.

A Quick History of the Gardens

Nestled within the bustling campus of the University of South Florida, the USF Botanical Gardens span an impressive 16 acres, serving as a living museum that captivates visitors with its beauty and biodiversity. Established in 1969, these gardens were once not much to look at as they were merely undeveloped wetlands.

Planting the seed- The 70’s and 80’s

The garden’s growth spurt came about during the 70’s and 80’s as the area was used primarily for a teaching and research facility for USF’s biology department. Although not yet open to the public, native and tropical plants were planted and nurtured during this time. The addition of greenhouses, a potting and storage shed, and fencing for the garden also took place throughout the 70’s and 80’s.

Watching it grow- The 90’s

The 90’s served as the serious profit-growing time for Tampa’s Botanical Gardens. The garden was opened to the public during this time which offered volunteer and membership programs to the public as well as the semi-annual plant festivals. The addition of new structures, demonstration gardens, and The Plant Shop led to the need for part-time staff to continue to make improvements to the garden facilities we still experience to this day.

Flourishing gardens- Today and tomorrow

Today, as guests wander through the gardens, they can explore a variety of themed areas, each offering its own unique charm. From the enchanting butterfly garden and the meticulously curated rose garden to the lush wetland habitats and the bountiful fruit tree grove, the gardens present over 3,000 plants, animals, and natural habitats. This meticulously maintained oasis not only showcases plants from Florida but also features an exotic collection from around the globe, making it a place of endless discovery and wonder for all who visit.
